Senior Association Meets
On Tuesday, March 18, a large group gathered in Los Angeles to enjoy breakfast and to participate in the first meeting of the ULTCW Senior Association. Among those present were Bervie Murray, age 94, her younger Sister “Mimi” Motley, 80, who cares for her, and Elizabeth Mitchell, 83.
Many more seniors joined their Los Angeles brothers and sisters from the San Bernardino Union Hall via video teleconferencing
Working in concert with other community organizations, the Senior Association promotes legislation that positively impacts older adults and people with disabilities.
The organization agitates for decent affordable housing, for quality healthcare and for the public provision of all the resources needed for people to be able to age with dignity.
“We were counting on our legislators and now we are facing a (budget) shortfall. It’s important to speak to your legislators and make them listen,” said Hugh Hallenberg, who represented Californians for Disability Rights at the meeting.
“I plan to get deeper into the issues,” said homecare worker Rosa Mundy, who attended the meeting. “My brother used to get his disability checks on the first, now it’s on the third. He’s 68, disabled and it’s hard for him to pay his rent on time. I think we should have a class action suit on behalf of disabled seniors to reinstate receiving their checks on the first.”
The SEIU-ULTCW Seniors Association plans on hosting a variety of activities for older adults to educate, empower and improve their lives.
This fall it plans to host its first Senior Convention where it will formulate initiatives that will be incorporated into ULTCW’s Presidential Election agenda.
