(March 5th, 2010) | Today in Los Angeles, 500 members of SEIU ULTCW and others packed the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church at a rally to kick off a 48-day “March for California’s Future” and to launch their own campaign to fight the Governor’s cuts to in-home care - also known as IHSS.

“Protecting California includes protecting the state’s in-home care program,” said Laphonza Butler, President-Elect of SEIU ULTCW. “Eliminating the IHSS program would result in more than 426,000 low-income seniors and disabled citizens losing the only services they receive to live safely at home, and over 328,000 in-home caregivers losing their jobs – placing California’s unemployment rate at nearly 14%. How is that good for California? It’s not! That's why these cuts must be stopped.”
In addition to ULTCW, members from CFT and UDW were on hand -- as well as Congresswoman Laura Richardson. Besides Butler, speakers included CA AFL-CIO President Art Pulaski, Reverend Dr. Louis Logan, and LA County Federation of Labor President Maria Elena Durazo.
